Humanity is No Borders Project Raises Awareness of the Challenges Faced by Refugee Women

The Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project "Humanity is No Borders" (Project No: 2023-2-TR01-KA152-YOU-000167854), coordinated by Artemis Women's Power MTÜ, is taking place in Mersin, Türkiye, from 22 to 29 October 2024. Bringing together young participants from Türkiye, Romania, Georgia, France, Estonia, and Czechia, the project aims to increase awareness of the challenges faced by refugee women while promoting human rights, gender equality, empathy, and social inclusion.

The project was developed in response to the long-standing underrepresentation of refugee women's experiences in migration policies and public discourse. For many years, refugee protection frameworks were largely based on male-centered perspectives, leaving the specific vulnerabilities and needs of women insufficiently addressed. "Humanity is No Borders" seeks to highlight these issues by encouraging young people to better understand the realities experienced by refugee women and the importance of gender-sensitive approaches in refugee protection.

Throughout the project, participants will explore topics such as the concept of refugee status, gender equality, women's rights, discrimination, racism, and social inclusion. They will also examine existing refugee policies, discuss the practical challenges faced by refugee women, and reflect on how societies can promote more inclusive and humane approaches toward displaced people.

The programme includes intercultural learning activities, workshops, group discussions, simulations, evaluation sessions, and practical educational exercises. By working together in an international environment, participants will exchange perspectives, strengthen their intercultural competencies, and develop a deeper understanding of humanitarian values and social responsibility.

The project involves 36 young participants aged 18–30, supported by six group leaders, with equal representation of women and men. Special attention has been given to the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, including those facing economic, geographical, and cultural barriers, ensuring equal participation and meaningful engagement throughout the exchange.

By the end of the project, participants are expected to gain a stronger understanding of refugee issues, particularly those affecting women, while developing greater empathy and respect for diversity. The project also aims to challenge stereotypes, reduce prejudice and discrimination, encourage active citizenship and volunteering, and promote the values of Erasmus+ and Youthpass as tools for intercultural learning, inclusion, and personal development.
