Climate Crisis and Migration Discussed in Madrid

The Erasmus+ KA153 Youth Workers Mobility project “Rebirth: Climate Crisis and Migration”, implemented by Artemis Women's Power MTÜ from Estonia and coordinated by KUFF Refugees and Minorities Solidarity Association from Spain, was held in Madrid/Alcobendas, Spain, between 29 April and 5 May 2025.

Within the framework of project number 2024-3-ES02-KA153-YOU-000265598, a total of 49 youth workers from Spain, Türkiye, North Macedonia, Estonia, Italy, Romania, and Hungary came together. The group also included 21 youth workers facing economic and geographical barriers.

The main objective of the project was to raise awareness about migration movements caused by climate change, wars, and environmental degradation, while drawing attention to the increasingly important issue of climate refugees. Participants explored how environmental challenges affect not only nature but also human living conditions and security, and developed innovative approaches that can be used in youth work to address these issues.

Throughout the mobility, youth workers discussed topics such as the environmental impacts of wars, depletion of natural resources, water pollution, climate change, and forced migration. Through workshops, presentations, group discussions, and non-formal learning methods, participants exchanged knowledge and designed awareness-raising activities for young people. Digital collages comparing cities before and after conflicts were created, artworks made from recycled materials were produced, and various activities promoting environmental sustainability were implemented.

The project aimed to strengthen the knowledge and competences of youth workers regarding environmental and climate-related issues while enabling them to transfer this knowledge to young people in their local communities. In this way, the initiative sought to contribute to the development of environmentally conscious young generations who are sensitive to global challenges and capable of creating sustainable solutions.

By highlighting the connection between climate change and migration, the “Rebirth: Climate Crisis and Migration” project promoted international cooperation, encouraged the integration of environmental sustainability into youth work practices, and increased the visibility of the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ Programme.
