Climate Crisis and Environmental Migration: Youth Workers Exploring Solutions for a Sustainable Future

As part of the “Rebirth: Climate Crisis and Migration” Erasmus+ Youth Workers Mobility Project (Reference Number: 2024-3-ES02-KA153-YOU-000265598), in which Artemis Women's Power MTÜ participated as a partner organization, a series of activities focused on the relationship between climate change and environmental migration. Bringing together youth workers in Madrid/Alcobendas, Spain, the project provided an opportunity to examine the social and environmental impacts of climate-related challenges while encouraging participants to exchange ideas on sustainable solutions.

One of the key themes explored during the project was the concept of environmental refugees. Participants examined how natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and droughts have historically forced people to leave their homes, while also discussing how climate change and global warming continue to accelerate migration today. Youth workers from different countries shared examples from their local contexts, contributing to a broader understanding of environmental migration as a growing global issue.

The activities also addressed the connection between environmental degradation, armed conflicts, and forced displacement. Through presentations, visual materials, and group discussions, participants analyzed how environmental destruction, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources contribute to migration movements and affect the lives of vulnerable communities. These discussions highlighted that environmental challenges are not only ecological concerns but also social and humanitarian issues requiring international cooperation.

Another important aspect of the project encouraged participants to imagine a world without wars and to reflect on the potential benefits of peace for sustainable development. Through research, scenario-building, and collaborative presentations, youth workers explored how education, healthcare, technology, agriculture, and environmental sustainability could evolve in more peaceful societies. The activity strengthened participants’ critical thinking skills while emphasizing the close relationship between peace, environmental protection, and long-term development.

Throughout the project, intercultural learning activities further enriched the experience by allowing participants to share their languages, traditions, and cultural values. The exchange of perspectives and experiences among youth workers from different countries fostered mutual understanding and strengthened international cooperation. As a result, the project not only increased awareness of climate change and environmental migration but also promoted solidarity, active citizenship, and collaborative approaches to addressing global challenges.
